There are no signs of the recession having an impact on graduate recruitment yet.                             Invited by the BBC business correspondent, Adam Shaw, to discuss the current situation on the Today programme, Anne-Marie Martin, the Director of The Careers Group commented that although there was much rumour and speculation there was, as yet, no evidence that the downturn was affecting graduate recruitment.  In previous recessions companies reneged on offers and laid-off whole cohorts of graduate recruits.  There have been no reports of this happening to those who graduated and started with employers in July 2008.  On campus, recruiters are busy, actively trying to attract candidates for their 2009 intake.  It is too early to tell whether this activity will turn into job offers.  If previous recessions are a guide, some companies may begin to offer internship contracts as this gives them more flexibility.  It is to be hoped that employers have learned from previous recessions and will continue to recruit new graduates as they need a continual flow of new talent into their organisations to be ready to take advantage of the resurgence of the market when it comes. Students seem a little more ‘clued up’ than usual with high attendance at recruitment activities, like todays job fair at the Business Design Centre in Islington.  There is a slight increase in interest in the jobs considered safe like accountancy, law and the teaching profession.
